The most popular music genres in 40 of the UK’s major cities - including Birmingham - have been identified in a new study.
Using data sourced from Music Metrics Vault and Playlist Miner, the research identified the most listened-to genres across major UK cities and matches this up to the songs that appear most frequently in genre-specific Spotify playlists.

Birmingham is renowned as the home of heavy metal with Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath hailing from the city. It is also where 80s New Romantics Duran Duran honed their globally renowned melodies and UB40 created reggae beats like never before.
Yet these genres haven’t been listed as the most popular for Birmingham in the new study which was released earlier today (Thursday, April 11).
Here’s a look at the most popular music genres in other cities around the UK
London's predominant genre is 'Pop', a popular musical style that originated in its modern form during the 1950s. For pop enthusiasts in the city, Flowers by Miley Cyrus is recommended as an ideal song choice to add to their playlists.

Hide AdIn Coventry, the most popular music genre is 'Coventry Indie', with 'Deep Christian Rock' in close second place. Based on the data, listeners should consider adding Dayglow's track Can I Call You Tonight? to their playlists.
The most popular music genre identified in both Leeds and Bradford is ‘Charva’, a form of electronic dance music that originated in the north of England. The top recommended song choice for this genre is Just How You Like It by K.A.D.
In Cambridge, ‘Anglican Liturgy’ comes out as the most popular music genre, with the top suggested song being Holy God, We Praise Thy Name - Benedictines of Mary and Queen of Apostles.


Bournemouth’s go to music choice is ‘UK Metal Core’ a combination of extreme metal and hardcore punk. A suggested song for listeners to add to their playlist is SECOND & SEBRING by Of Mice and Men.

Hide AdIn Bristol, the most favoured choice of music is ‘Jungle’, a genre of dance music that came out of the 90s UK rave scene. Playlist Miner suggests that listeners should add Junglist (feat. Peter Bouncer) by Congo Natty to their music library.
‘Bouncy House’ is the most popular music genre in Newcastle, characterised by its upbeat and energetic rhythms, the genre produces songs such as Stop It by FISHER - which is the topmost suggested song for listeners.
In Cardiff, 'Welsh Folk' is the favoured genre among residents. Fans of this music style should add Sleeping on the Blacktop by Colter Wall to their playlists.
In Portsmouth, the prevailing music genre is Sunset Lounge, a style that fuses jazz, soul, and electronic elements, to create a calming ambiance. For fans of this genre, Ride It by Regard stands out as the top recommended song.

In Birmingham, the preferred music genre is 'UK Hip Hop', also referred to as 'Brit-hop', with the top-matched song for this genre being Ladbroke Grove by AJ Tracey. The study was conducted by CSGO gambling site CSGOLuck. Discussing the findings, a spokesperson said: "In our study exploring the musical tastes of major cities, we’ve been able to uncover the distinctive music profiles that define each area and really celebrate our diverse taste.
“The music scene is so varied throughout the UK, and this serves as a reminder that while people have different preferences, there are similarities from area to area. “We’re also able to provide tailored song recommendations based on these findings, which will help people who want to expand their music taste or perhaps are looking to create a playlist that will appeal to the majority in their area.”
