Hennessey’s Bar, Birmingham
With the football season now underway, we’ve selected some of our favourite pubs around the city, and a few closer to our two iconic football grounds, as Aston Villa and Birmingham City fans make their return to the stands after more than 18 months away.
But for those not fortunate enough to grab a ticket - or maybe you just prefer sitting and watching it with a pint and a group of mates - we’ve got you covered, and there’s certainly no shortage of pubs and bars to watch live sport at in Birmingham, so we’ve rounded up 10 of our favourites…
Located in the city centre, this Australian-themed sports bar is the perfect place to chill out before watching your team put you through a stressful 90 minutes of football.
The venue is the ideal location to watch live sport with large HD TVs helping to replicate the match-day atmosphere.
The bar is also famed for its great selection of beers and expansive menu.
Birmingham’s popular gin distillery is beautifully situated next to the canal and is one of the most popular venues to watch live sport in the city. During the football season staff turn the venue’s canal side terrace into an incredible viewing area so you can watch the game unfold on a huge projector screen while enjoying a cold beer.
At Hennessey’s Bar in the city centre, you can enjoy the match on multi screens and multi platforms. The venue even shows up to four games at once across three bars and five rooms. So whether you want to watch the Villa, Blues, the rugby, cricket or golf, Hennessey’s has you covered.
And the bar also had a state of the art LED screen in the garden so you can enjoy the game with a refreshing pint and a brilliant atmosphere when the sun is shining.
Just a five-minute walk from St Andrews, every match-going regular on the blue side of the city will be familiar with The Roost. The popular pub is ideal for pre-match drinks, as well as for those who would prefer to watch the game outside of the stadium but be able to retain the match-day atmosphere.
The Roost, a historic venue, which dates back to the early 1900s and is even mentioned in Peaky Blinders under its old name, also has a large beer garden, three bars and five TVs with Sky Sports and BT Sports.
The Aston Tavern
If you’re heading to Villa Park, this restored Victorian pub is the perfect location for a pre-match pint. The Aston Tavern is just a stone’s throw away from Villa Park and is one of our favourite spots around the ground. With three bars spread across the venue, the pub opens from 10am each match day, showing Sky Sports on multiple screens and big screens.
O’Neill’s Broad Street
O’Neill’s Irish bar on Broad Street is one of the city’s most popular venues for watching live sport with Sky and BT available. You can also enjoy the game while tucking into some classic pub-grub.
O’Neill’s has a great food and drink menu, so if you’re after a hearty breakfast, a filling lunch or dinner, or a few alcoholic beverages to ease those pre-match nerves, this city centre bar is the place to be.
Tucked away on Cannon Street in the city centre, The Windsor is one of Birmingham’s more traditional boozers offering a fantastic selection of real ales, and with BT Sport and Sky Sports available, you can watch all the televised Premier League matches as well as the top European action .
The Patrick Kavanagh
Situated in Moseley, South Birmingham, The Patrick Kavanagh has a fantastic range of drinks and is renowned for being the place to be on match day with all the Premier League action you could ask for. With a great selection of beers and regular guest ales, this Irish boozer is the perfect place to watch live football with TV screens inside the pub as well as in the beer garden.
Tucked away on Temple Street, this grade II listed local is brimming with history and shows all the live sport you could ask for, including all the action from the Premier League, Champions League, rugby union and more. The Trocadero is the perfect place for some classic pub-grub to enjoy before the game.
This traditional city centre pub is another great shout if you’re looking for a nice meal and few drinks before or during the game.
With great service and reasonable prices, The Railway also has BT and Sky Sports and shows all the major sporting events as well as all the big games.
