Gary O’Neil has issued an update on Yerson Mosquera, who was injured during Wolves’ 3-1 defeat at Aston Villa.

Mosquera was stretchered off the field deep in the second half following a lunging challenge from Villa forward Morgan Rogers, when the score was still level at 1-1. The Colombian defender received several minutes of treatment as he lay uncomfortably on the ground, before eventually being carried down the tunnel.

O’Neil confirmed post-match that Mosquera had remained at Villa Park rather than been transported to hospital, with Wolves’ club doctors and physios offering further assistance in the dressing room.

“We’ve got no real information, it just doesn’t look good for us at the moment,” O’Neil said in the press conference.

“It was his knee. We’re hoping for the best with the scan results in the next few days. It was a big blow for us in the game, especially at the time it was. It’s also a big blow in an area of the pitch we are already short in.

“He was performing at a really high level. It’s an area we were short in at the end of the transfer window and one we couldn’t afford to lose,” O’Neil continued.

Santiago Bueno was the man to step in for Mosquera for the rest of the game and Wolves went on to crumble, conceding a further two goals to lose for a fourth time in five Premier League matches. The Uruguayan wasn’t the only one at fault as Mario Lemina and Rayan Ait-Nouri lost all sense of positioning for Ezri Konsa and Jhon Duran’s respective tap-ins.

With a lack of depth across defence in general - let alone just in the middle - Mosquera’s injury is a worrying moment for Wolves. There’s one positive, though, with Toti Gomes nearing a return.

“He’s done a bit of light training but the medical team weren’t comfortable with where he was. We’ll reassess him early this week and see,” O’Neil added.
