Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly ignited an interest in former Tottenham Hotspur winger Marcus Edwards. Speculation has linked the Englishman with a return to Spurs but Wolves are now said to be rivaling the north Londoners for his signature.

Currently enjoying a spell of fine form in Portugal for Cristiano Ronaldo’s former side Sporting Lisbon, Edwards is a versatile attacking player who can operate either out wide or as a creator through the centre. According to self-proclaimed ‘transfer expert’ Ekrem Konur, Wolves are ‘keen’ on signing the 23-year-old.

Edwards been likened to Lionel Messi of late after some impressive performances in the UEFA Champions League. One game in particular, against his former club Tottenham in the group stages, saw Edwards carry out a number of dazzling dribbles, tearing Spurs’ backline to shreds.

Across all competitions, Edwards has scored seven goals and assisted six in just 19 appearances. With his direct contributions making up over a third of Sporting’s total this season, the former England youth international is starting to show what he is capable of.

He could add to an already pacy Wanderers front line and provide competition to those leading the line at Molineux. Incoming manager Julen Lopetegui has often relied on quick and agile forwards in the past with his typical attacking 4-3-3 shape. Edwards could theoretically fit this very well.

Nothing particularly concrete has emerged as of yet for this rumour but it could be one to watch in the coming months. Edwards is unlikely to feature in the Three Lions squad ahead of the World Cup, so he would be refreshed and raring to go if Wolves were to make a move in January.

With his current deal at Sporting not running out until June 2026, and with plenty of attention on him, Edwards won’t come on the cheap. As estimated by Transfermarkt, his market value as of the start of this month is around €25 million (£22 million).
