Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly eyeing up Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres as a January transfer target. The former Brighton man, who signed for the Sky Blues for just £1 million in 2021, is the equal top scorer in the Sky Bet Championship this season with 12 goals in 23 appearances.

New manager Julen Lopetegui has already been granted one wish with the signing of Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha announced on Christmas Day - and now it seems the Spaniard will be backed further with a swoop for another frontman. The Wanderers, with 10, have scored the least goals in the Premier League this term so it is no wonder they are trying to strengthen in the final third.

Wolves are set to face competition for Gyokeres, however, as Football League World reports Leeds United, Brentford, Southampton and Crystal Palace are all planning on making an approach to Coventry. With so many clubs said to be in the race, quite the bidding war could ensue – much to the amusement of Brighton, who have a sell-on clause.

With Coventry just two points off the top six as things stand, and with a game in and over the entire top five, reaching the playoffs come the end of the season is a realistic target. These hopes would be significantly dampened if Gyokeres were to leave, though, so it is likely they would not budge unless a huge fee was placed on the table.

Gyokeres, who stands at 6ft 1in, is a fairly physical yet pacy centre forward often seen stretching opposition defences with runs into the channels. Since making his senior debut in 2019, the 24-year-old has established himself as a regular starter for Sweden, scoring two goals in 11 matches at international level. If he is not already, he certainly is not far away from being Premier League standard.
