Wolverhampton Wanderers youngster Nathan Fraser has remarkably turned down the opportunity to represent the Republic of Ireland.

The 19-year-old, eligible to play for Ireland through a grandparent, has decided to reject an international call-up amid a commitment to Wolves.

An excellent opportunity was available to join The Boys in Green for friendly fixtures against Hungary and Portugal over the next two weeks. Fraser could have faced up against legendary striker Cristiano Ronaldo on June 11 but the decision has been made with the Old Gold firmly in mind.

It’s hoped the extra focus on preparation for next season can increase his chances of playing regular football under Gary O’Neil. Fraser wants to make his proper first-team breakthrough after making one Premier League start and six substitute appearances last campaign; rejecting Ireland is a way of emphasising his commitment to succeeding at Molineux.

Fraser’s rejection of Ireland a regular occurrence

This isn’t the first occasion Fraser has declined an Ireland call. The teenager decided it was best to snub an international approach back in March as he was Wolves’ only fit striker at the time. It led to his first start in the English top flight - against Fulham - so it was definitely worth the sacrifice.

It’s a more controversial choice this time around, though, as Wolves don’t play matches in any capacity for another two months. The only real benefit of turning down the chance to don the Shamrock is to focus on very individual training. You’d think joining up with a host of experienced internationals would benefit - especially as it’s only for two weeks - but the decision is final.
