Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly weighing up an approach for Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin.

Wolves are keeping a close eye on Thelin in case they decide to part ways with current head coach, Gary O’Neil.

The Old Gold are expected to back O’Neil for a while longer but the head coach is without doubt on thin ice following the Old Gold’s worst start to a Premier League season since 2003.

Six defeats and one draw in the opening seven fixtures make for grim reading, and Saturday’s heavy 5-3 defeat away at Brentford only added to the humiliation. Yes, the fixture run has been very tricky, but there are no excuses for the 21 goals conceded so far, averaging out at three per game.

There have been signs of promise among the poor results as O’Neil’s men have often performed well for 60-70 minutes of fixtures. Late capitulations have cost Wolves on far too many occasions, however, leaving them with just one point from the 21 available.

Wanderers’ hierarchy still have faith in O’Neil to turn the tide at Molineux but with games against Manchester City and Brighton & Hove Albion to come, the likelihood is Wolves will remain winless for a while longer yet.

With the outlook rather bleak, it’s a sensible approach to keep potential replacements in mind – and a new report suggests that’s exactly what Wolves are doing.

Sun Sport claims Wanderers are “considering making a move” for Thelin, who has stunned everyone in the Scottish Premiership by leading Aberdeen to a perfect eight victories out of eight to start the new season. Not only that, but the 46-year-old boasts a 100 per cent win rate since taking over, with all 13 matches ending in Aberdeen’s favour.
