Wolverhampton Wanderers will not sign midfield transfer target Carlos Alcaraz this January as fellow Premier League side Southampton are on the verge of bringing in the Racing Club ace, according to a reputable report. Wolves have been heavily linked with Alcaraz’s services for months but the search for midfield depth will have to go on.

New manager Julen Lopetegui has been vocal about his lack of options in the centre of the park, especially with fixture congestion rife with Premier League and cup games coming in quick succession. Alcaraz, who can play in most positions across the midfield, would have been a great rotation option for the Wanderers.

But he will be heading to the south coast instead, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Italian journalist reports: “Southampton are set to sign top talent Carlos Alcaraz from Racing. He wasn’t close to Benfica and Saints are now set to complete €14 million deal. Medical tests this week, one more here we go after Orsic.”

The news comes as a huge blow for Wolves as not only will they miss out on having a player of Alcaraz’s talent, but the 20-year-old is likely to boost their direct relegation rivals. Southampton are currently rock bottom of the Premier League, one place and two points behind Wolves. The two sides face one another on Saturday, February 11 in a huge six-pointer clash.
