Villarreal are reportedly stepping up their efforts to sign a Wolverhampton Wanderers defender on a permanent deal.

Yerson Mosquera, who spent the second half of last season on loan with Villarreal, is wanted for a permanent transfer and Wolves could earn a sizeable fee.

The three-time Colombia international, signed from Atletico Nacional in 2021 for around £4 million, has impressed throughout the past six months. Mosquera played 18 times for Villarreal across all competitions and put in a host of solid performances, including in the UEFA Europa League.

Mosquera’s loan signing was expected to merely offer competition to the likes of Jorge Cuenta, Eric Bailly, Raul Albiol and Aissa Mandi but he exceeded expectations. An aerial threat, the 23-year-old not only defended resolutely but contributed three goals to help Villarreal achieve a top-eight La Liga finish.

Spanish publication El Periodico Mediterraneo reports Yellow Submarine head coach Marcelino has made Mosquera his “big signing request” for the upcoming transfer window. No exact fee is mentioned but Wolves would be keen to gain a hefty profit due to the excellent form the defender has found.

O’Neil might want to assess Mosquera first

Wanderers are unlikely to stand in Mosquera’s way if a significant offer arrives as sales are needed to continue to comply with the Premier League’s strict profit and sustainability (PSR) rules. Gary O’Neil may want to assess his player properly first, however, as Wolves lack depth at centre-half.

Yosquera has made just one senior appearance for the Old Gold as he spent his first season in the youth academy. He then went out on loan to Major League Soccer outfit FC Cincinatti ahead of his temporary move to Villarreal. O’Neil may want to take a closer look before authorising a sale.
