Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly closing in on the signing of Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi on a permanent deal.

Previously linked with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, the 47-time Switzerland international has been tipped for a Premier League transfer for a while.

Elvedi has made an impressive 270 appearances for Mönchengladbach since signing from FC Zürich in 2015, contributing 14 goals and nine assists during that period.

Now aged 26, the versatile defender, who can play at either centre-half position or at right-back, has decided it’s time to take on a new career challenge.

It had been reported on Monday by Express and Star that Wolves had initiated talks with Mönchengladbach and now things have progressed very quickly.

Football Insider claims Wanderers have had a breakthrough in negotiations and are now finalising a deal worth in the region of £7.7 million to bring Elvedi to Molineux.

Julen Lopetegui and sporting director Matt Hobbs have been searching for a new right-sided centre back ever since talks began over the departure of Nathan Collins.

Following the Irishman’s £23 million transfer to Brentford, Wolves have had to step up their efforts but now appear to have their man. Elvedi could sign as soon as this week.
