Wolverhampton Wanderers are expected to complete the permanent signing of a Portuguese wonderkid this week after beating Atletico Madrid to his signature.

The Old Gold are set to make Braga wideman Rodrigo Gomes their second official summer addition, following on from Tommy Doyle’s loan from Manchester City turning permanent.

Beating Spanish La Liga giants Atletico Madrid to do so, it’s understood Wolves are set to acquire the services of Gomes for just £12.7 million. The 20-year-old, who can play as a right-back, right midfielder or left midfielder, has just enjoyed a brilliant breakthrough season as he scored seven and assisted seven in 30 Liga Portugal matches on loan at Estoril Praia.

The contract will be signed in the coming days as the player, who is six times a Portugal Under-21 international with three goals, has been booked in to fly to England and complete medical tests. If all goes to plan, Gomes will put pen to paper on a five-year deal, delighting Gary O’Neil as he gets properly underway with his summer transfer business.

Wolves to sell before conducting more major business

It’s expected to be a fairly quiet window for Wolves as sales are needed before major acquisitions but getting a deal done early is certainly a promising sign. There are other targets being looked at, too, so other swoops could materialise as soon as funds are raised.

Star winger Pedro Neto is one player who could be sacrificed. The 24-year-old was one of Wanderers’ best players last term as he scored two and assisted nine in 20 Premier League fixtures but around £60 million could be acquired from his departure alone.
