Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker Gonçalo Guedes has had his loan at Benfica terminated ahead of a January loan transfer to La Liga side Villarreal.

The Portugal international, who was signed by the Old Gold for €32.6 million (£27.9 million) from Valencia in August 2022, sees his Wolves stay end after just 18 appearances. The transfer has been a disaster as Guedes netted just two goals in those games, with just one in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old went out on loan to Benfica for the second half of last season after falling out with former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui. Guedes then returned to Benfica for the first part of this campaign but only played 264 minutes across all competitions.

Transfer news journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that "an agreement has been sealed with Wolves" for Guedes to move to Villarreal immediately. The attacker is set to fly into Spain for a medical before completing his transfer.

The nature of the deal is yet to be confirmed, but it's understood to be a straight six-month loan, with Villarreal paying 100 per cent of the player's wages. Wolves don't want to sell Guedes permanently just yet.

If the versatile forward can enjoy consistent game time in La Liga and start netting some goals again, Wanderers are in with a better chance of recouping more of the enormous £27.9 million fee they paid.
