Newcastle United have reportedly discussed Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Rúben Neves as a transfer target in a recent recruitment meeting.

The Magpies are said to be eager on bringing in the Portugal international after the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, was said to put a knife in a potential Barcelona switch.

Reports in Spain suggest Mendes has given up on Neves heading to Camp Nou as Barcelona don’t have the funds. The Catalan giants are still failing to sell winger Ansu Fati.

This has opened the door for Newcastle as they look to bolster their midfield options ahead of playing Champions League football during the 2023/24 campaign.

An exclusive from NUFC Blog claims “Neves was discussed” by Newcastle as a potential alternative if a move for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Manu Kone fails.

Wolves are still hoping they can keep hold of their star man but Mendes’ recent comments suggest a transfer is on the cards. “Ruben Neves deal? Keep calm,” the agent hinted via Fabrizio Romano.

Neves, who arrived at Molineux from Porto in 2017 for a fee of in the region of £15 million, is seen as a Wolves legend for his involvement over the past six seasons.

The 26-year-old has played 253 times for Wanderers, scoring 30 goals and notching 13 assists in the process. His contract at Wolves expires in 12 months.
