Liverpool are reportedly considering making an approach for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes before the end of the summer transfer window.

The Portugal international has been heavily linked with the Reds in the past and his name is said to have re-entered discussions following failed moves for Moisés Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

Although a completely different profile of player to those two, Nunes has been on Liverpool’s radar for a long time, with interest stretching back as far as when he was at Sporting CP.

Anfield Watch reports Jürgen Klopp’s side are weighing up an official bid to Wolves with Nunes on the shortlist. Nice midfielder Khéphren Thuram and Leicester City ace Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall are also being considered.

It was clear to see the centre of the park was where Liverpool’s frailties lie as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on the opening weekend of the Premier League.

Alexis Mac Allister looked comfortable but Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai had to sit a little further back than they usually would. The Reds, it appears, are in dire need of a central midfielder.

What would Matheus Nunes bring to Liverpool?

Nunes, if signed, could solve plenty of selection headaches for Klopp due to his versatility. Able to play as a deep-lying playmaker, on either flank or behind the striker, the 24-year-old would be of great help.

Wolves fans will be the first to say Nunes sometimes goes a little missing in games but he does tend to step up in the big matches. The Portuguese’s stunning volley to beat Chelsea 1-0 last season is a great example.

Another instance was far more recently as he stunned Manchester United at Old Trafford. With six dribbles completed, five interceptions, three tackles and two aerial duels won, Nunes pulled off a midfield all-rounder masterclass.
