Reports emerged last week that Saudi Pro League outfit Al Hilal had agreed to pay Wolves a fee of around £47 million for Neves, and the player has since accepted personal terms.

He’s yet to officially sign for Al Hilal, however, leaving the door slightly ajar for any clubs that may want to make a late hijack attempt. After all, countless teams have expressed an interest.

Johnson thinks Liverpool, who have been linked with Neves in the past, should swoop in for the 26-year-old. “Yes, I do believe he’s good enough to start in Liverpool’s midfield,” Johnson told Betfred.

“He’s a very good all-round midfielder and you can understand why many of the big clubs want to sign him. As long as he can maintain the same level of form and can remain injury free, then he could be a good addition to Liverpool’s midfield.”

The Reds have already signed Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion this summer and are said to be closing in on Khephren Thuram from OGC Nice, meaning a move for another midfielder is unlikely.

That hasn’t stopped Johnson from dreaming, though. The ex-England international was quite the iconic fan favourite at Anfield between 2009 and 2015 and he’s still keeping a keen eye on his former club.
