Match of the Day duo Gary Lineker and Jermaine Jenas are in agreement that new Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui is joining the club at an ideal time to make a maximum impact at Molineux.

The Spaniard was unveiled as Wanderers’ latest permanent appointment on Saturday, but won’t take charge of a match until Boxing Day because of the upcoming break to accomodate this winter’s World Cup. As such, the ex-Real Madrid and Spain boss will be given an extended period to instil his style of play into his new squad.

Speaking on Saturday’s edition of Match of the Day, Lineker hailed the 56-year-old for his admirable pedigree, while also acknowledging the size of the task awaiting him in the Midlands. He said: “Lopetegui, coming in at Wolves, he’s got a big job to do - but he’s got quite a reputation.”

Ex-England midfielder Jenas responded: “He’s got a pedigree, hasn’t he? He’s been right at the top of management. I think from a Wolves point of view, it’s exactly what they needed. All Wolves fans will be looking at it and saying that their biggest problem has been scoring goals.

“He didn’t initially sign the deal. He’s gone back to sign the deal which would tell me that hopefully it’s because he wanted the money to go and spend on the squad and get some players in - which is exactly what they need.”

Lineker added: “It’s quite good timing for a new manager to come in in a way because of the World Cup break. It’s a little chance. I know some of the players will be away, but it’s like a preseason.”

Jenas replied: “A mini-preseason, get into the players exactly your style of play, and gives you some time going into January, definitely.”

Wolves slumped to a 3-2 defeat against Brighton on Saturday afternoon having twice led the Seagulls. A third defeat in four matches leaves Wanderers 19th in the table, with just 10 points from their opening 14 fixtures. Lopetegui’s first game in charge of the club will come against Everton at Goodison Park on December 26th.
