Tottenham Hotspur right-back Matt Doherty has agreed to sign for Atletico Madrid on loan until the end of the season. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers ace, who was loved by fans and ex-manager Nuno Espirito Santo alike, is expected to undergo a medical shortly before putting pen to paper on a surprise switch.

Hide AdThe deal has been inspired by Spurs’ deadline day transfer hopes for Sporting Lisbon full-back Pedro Porro, who will sign for Antonio Conte’s side today, as per Fabrizio Romano. Meanwhile, Sporting will replace Porro with former Arsenal man Hector Bellerin.
As first called by Marca and later relayed by Romano, there is no buy option clause included, but an “agreement is in place” to take Doherty from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to the Wanda Metropolitano until June of this year. The Irishman, who played a remarkable 302 matches for Wolves across all competitions, makes his first move to the nearby continent.
Since joining Spurs from Wanderers in 2020, things have never fully got underway for the 31-year-old as he has failed to make more than 17 league appearances in any of the three seasons that have followed. With just 12 matches to his name in the Premier League this term, many of which have been off the bench, it feels like a good time for Doherty to move on for some additional game time.
