Wolverhampton Wanderers have agreed to loan a striker to Birmingham City’s League One rivals Huddersfield Town.

Wolves forward Tawanda Chirewa will spend the rest of the 2024/25 season at League One club Huddersfield following an agreement reached on deadline day.

The Zimbabwe international spent the first half of the campaign at Derby County but made just five appearances in the Championship, four of which were off the bench. Wolves recalled Chirewa from his spell at Pride Park and haven’t played him since, partly because it would block another loan switch away.

Both Wolves and Huddersfield have confirmed Chirewa has made the drop down to League One, where it’s hoped the versatile attacker can gain more regular minutes. The 21-year-old could have a say in how Wolves’ local rivals, Birmingham City, get on as Huddersfield - albeit in the fringes - are in the fight for automatic promotion to the Championship.

Chirewa, who can play as a centre-forward, a shadow striker, on either flank, as an attacking midfielder or even as a deep-lying playmaker, should be of great use to Huddersfield for the remainder of the campaign. The Terriers, currently fifth in League One, will be keen to close the gap to second-placed Wycombe Wanderers – a deficit that currently stands at 11 points with a game in hand.

Former Wolves boss Gary O’Neil utilised Chirewa’s services during the second half of last season, handing the Zimbabwean all of his 10 senior Old Gold appearances to date. Wanderers were enduring an injury crisis at the time - particularly in attack - and Chirewa profited, making his first eight Premier League appearances.

Although Chirewa didn’t score a single goal during his brief stint in the senior team, he showed signs of quality and always looked very determined to prove himself on the biggest stage. He’ll be equally as motivated to impress at Huddersfield with a new opportunity now on the cards.

Another Wolves star set for third-tier loan

Chirewa’s not the only Old Gold youngster on his way to League One as Barnsley are reportedly closing in on the loan signing of Dexter Lembikisa, who recently had spells at Rotherham United, Heart of Midlothian and Yverdon Sport.

TBR Football journalist Graeme Bailey claims Barnsley are looking to bring in Lembikisa before the transfer deadline. The Tykes, 10th in the English third division and just one point outside the play-off positions, have been searching for a new right-sided defender.

The hours are counting down ahead of the deadline but all parties are said to be hopeful a deal can be completed.
