West Bromwich Albion will welcome Birmingham City to the Hawthorns on Wednesday evening in the Championship.

The game, which kicks-off at 8pm, will be the first meeting between the two sides this season with the reverse fixture set to take place at St Andrew’s on February 11 2023.

There was some doubt around whether the match would go ahead after last weekend’s games were postponed following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, however, on Monday the English Football League confirmed all midweek fixtures will go ahead.

West Brom have become accustomed to the Championship in recent campaigns, with this season being their fourth out of their last five in the second tier.

For Birmingham, this is their 12th consecutive campaign in the Championship following their relegation from the Premier League during the 2010-11 season.

During this period the Baggies and Blues have met six times in the league. With that being said, let’s take a look at which team has had the better of their previous meetings in the Championship.

The Blues have the bragging rights going into Wednesday’s games after beating the Baggies 1-0 at St Andrew’s at the back end of last season.

Lyle Taylor’s 67th minute penalty was enough for Birmingham to seal all three points that day.

The Baggies secured the three points the last time the two teams met at the Hawthorns thanks to Karlan Grant’s goal 15 minutes before the final whistle.

West Brom 0-0 Birmingham - June 20 2020

The lowest score-line of their previous six meetings came at the Hawthorns in June 2020. This was both clubs first league game since the Covid-19 pandemic halted football in March and was restarted.

Before the pandemic hit there was a memorable clash between both teams at St Andrew’s in late 2019 with West Brom running out 3-2 winners.

Charlie Austin netted the winner and his second of the afternoon with just nine minutes of normal time remaining.

West Brom 3-2 Birmingham - March 29 2019

There’s nothing like consistency in football, this was the case for the Baggies during the 2018-19 season when they beat the Blues 3-2 again, this time at the Hawthorns.

Jake Livermore was the hero on that day, scoring an emphatic 74th minute winner for West Brom.

Honours were even in their first league meeting between both clubs in the Championship since 2007.

The game was exactly four years to the day of the upcoming fixture and fans of both teams will be hoping the game won’t finish this way on Wednesday.

Verdict

Overall the Baggies have the better record in the derby in the last six meetings, winning on three occasions.

However, their form coming into Wednesday’s clash has only seen them win one of their last five league games, while Birmingham have won two of their previous five fixtures.
