West Brom earned a hard-fought point after drawing 1-1 with Sheffield United in the Sky Bet Championship at Bramall Lane.

The Baggies equalised on the stroke of half time through Karlan Grant after Andre Brooks opened the scoring for the hosts. Both sides had chances in the second-half to win, with the Blades dominating most of the second 45, but unable to break down the rear guard of Chris Brunt’s men.

The hosts started the brighter of the two sides and enjoyed a good spell of possession. West Brom started nervously and kept giving the ball away in dangerous areas. Kieffer Moore and Brooks both had chances which came from errors from Jayson Molumby and Ousmane Diakite.

Callum Styles had the first shot on target of the match. He cut in from the flank and had two options to the left of him but opted to shoot, but it ended up being a tame effort for Michael Cooper.

Sheffield United took the lead from a defensive lapse in concentration. Diakite was robbed of possession, and Brooks could exchange a few passes with Callum O’Hare in the build-up before tucking his shot under Alex Palmer.

Two chances came from West Brom to equalise with Josh Maja coming under too much pressure to get more power on his shot. The second opportunity came from Tom Fellows who should have scored as he hooked the ball over the bar after Grant had curled a shot at Cooper who palmed the ball to Fellows' path.

West Brom got themselves level just before the half-time whistle was about to sound through Grant. They worked the ball on the edge of the box and the ball fortuitously cannoned off of Fellows into the path of Grant who scored with a low, hard, accurate finish.

The visitors started the second period how they finished the first and that was on top. Cooper clawed the ball away to deny Grant from almost certainly scoring with a header.

Goalscorer Grant had an opportunity to double his tally. Mikey Johnston fed him in with a low pass and he laced a shot at Cooper who reacted well to the effort.

The tide was with Sheffield United from the 60th minute. Tobjorn Heggem and Diakite both made good blocks to deny Tom Davies and Alfie Gilchrist. United wanted a penalty with 20 minutes remaining but referee Stuart Atwell believed Diakite and Callum O'Hare went shoulder to shoulder.

Rhian Brewster had an opportunity to put the home side in front after being picked out by Brooks, but his tight-angled shot went over the bar. In the aftermath, Jayson Molumby was screaming at his teammates to try to re-organise themselves after facing relentless pressure from the Blades.

Five minutes of additional time was shown by the fourth official, and West Brom had their own chances to steal a win. A few corner kicks came in and there were slight appeals for a penalty with shirts being pulled, but nothing was given. United worked the ball in the box for the final few moments, but couldn’t find that second goal, with the referee sounding the full-time whistle, bringing to an end a pulsating game.

West Brom ratings vs Sheffield United

Alex Palmer - 6

A bit nervy passing the ball out to his defenders. He wasn’t really forced in to any saves.

A day for the defenders this. The last half hour saw them battle hard, and Furlong played his part in securing a point.

Involved in a real battle with Kieffer Moore. Took a few battle scars early on with a cut on his leg. Did well to contain the striker.

Torbjorn Heggem - 7

Warrior like performance.

Callum Styles - 7

A good balance between defence and attack. Did his defensive duties well but also wanted to get forward.

Ousmane Diakite - 7 (subbed off, 80)

It was just his second league start for the Baggies. He started nervously and United’s goal came from an error from him. Diakite picked himself up though, and delivered a fairly satisfactory performance.

Jayson Molumby - 7

A workman like performance from Molumby. A solid showing in the second half.

Tom Fellows (subbed off, 71) - 6

He should have at least got his effort on target in the first half. He and Johnston did look lively in the second period however.

Karlan Grant (subbed off, 65) - 8

A real handful for the opposition. He not only got West Brom's equaliser, but he was getting others involved, and had plenty of chances, forcing Michael Cooper into several saves. Taken off just after the hour as he’s only just returned from injury.

Mikey Johnston (subbed off, 71) - 6

Built up a good partnership with Karlan Grant. Fed him a few passes in a good position.

Josh Maja (subbed off, 80) - 6

Held the ball up well, but didn’t have any real opportunities of note.

Jed Wallace (subbed on, 65) - 6

Grady Diangana (subbed on, 71) - 6

Devante Cole (subbed on, 71) - 6

Lewis Dobbin (subbed on, 80) - 6

John Swift (subbed on, 80) - 6
