West Brom player ratings: Baggies fight back to earn a point against Middlesbrough

Baggies’ opening game of the new Championship season ended in a draw as summer signings John Swift and Jed Wallace impressed on their debuts

West Bromwich Albion fought back from 1-0 down to earn a point against Chris Wilder’s Middlesbrough on the opening day of the 2022/23 Championship season.

Isaiah Jones’ 10th minute strike gave the home side an early lead before John Swift levelled things up on his debut early in the second period to earn Steve Bruce’s men a well earned point.

Albion struggled to get into the game in the first half and were fortunate not to be 2-0 down at half time. Bruce must have had some stern words for his players because the away side responded well to a poor first half performance. Jed Wallace’s cut back was perfect for Swift who connected well to smash home the equaliser with 50 minutes on the clock.

It was a tightly contested second half following Albion’s equaliser, and Baggies came close to taking all three points ater Daryl Dike’s cross was inches away from being turned home by Swift.

Overall, Bruce will be pleased with a point away from home, especially after a tricky opening day challenge at the Riverside Stadium.

Here are the player ratings.
