A former West Brom and Wigan Athletic man wants to make a return to English football.

Former West Brom utility man Paul Scharner is open to a return to the club as he predicts the club will win promotion to the Premier League during the Shilen Patel era.

40-time Austria international Scharner played for West Brom 2010 to 2012 after joining from 2011/12 FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic on a free transfer. He made 64 appearances for the club over two seasons before joining Hamburger SV.

The 44-year-old has kept a firm interest in to what’s been going on at the Hawthorns and believes there are reasons to be positive after Shilen Patel’s take over from Guochuan Lai. The Baggies have a chance of a return to the Premier League after a goalless draw with Southampton in the play-offs on Sunday and Scharner is confident the club will be in the prem one way or another in the next few years.

“I'm especially grateful that West Brom now have a new owner to be honest,” he said to OLBG.

“It was very, very difficult with the previous owners.

“So at least there is stability in the next couple of years. So I think I'm quite confident that West Brom will get promoted at some point over the next two years.

Look at Luton Town, they have a very stable management and they have all grown together and then you can achieve something outstanding.

That was missing at West Bromwich because of the owner. There was no togetherness and now we can achieve something great together. But now I'm confident that this atmosphere is growing in the next couple of years and it ends in promotion to the Premier League.”

Scharner is due to make an appearance at the Hawthorns later this year. The Albion Foundation is hosting Scharner at the Hawthorns on Friday, August 2, 2024. The fan favourite will speak of his time at the club, where he is remembered for his performances in derby matches.

He owns his own business called 'Lighthouse - Partners for Life' where he works as a personal coach. It's a role that sees him help young players make the necessary steps in to becoming a professional. He’s been retired since September 2013, but is now keen to help out where he can with a club that he has fond memories at.

"I'm now in a phase in my life that I'm focused on club football and positions in the club," he added.

"Normally you need some experience to get some interest in you and I can't see that for the next 10 years in my life.

"So let's see, maybe I can help with a consultant, outside consultant and help the community and also the club grow as a unit, actually. And yeah, let's see, I'm open. I was there for a supporters meeting in March, it’s always great to come back.”
