A deadline day deal for a £15m striker remains in the balance as West Brom anxiously await EFL approval.

West Bromwich Albion face an agonising wait to find out whether their eleventh-hour deadline day loan bid for Southampton striker Adam Armstrong has been successful.

West Brom and Southampton struck a deal that would see the forward, who can play on the left of a front three or as a central striker, move to the Hawthorns for the rest of the current campaign, but now have to wait and see whether the EFL will approve the deal.

The Baggies had been linked with a move for the former Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers forward earlier on deadline day, but the finances of a loan deal had appeared likely to prevent it from happening prior to a late breakthrough.

According to the Express & Star, the club discovered that a deal could be struck only after 10pm, and it remains unclear whether all the requisite paperwork was completed in time for the deal to be given the rubber stamp.

Prolific Armstrong on brink of Championship return

The signing of the 27-year-old forward would be a significant boost for the Baggies as they look to return to the Premier League for the first time since 2021.

Armstrong has 86 goals under his belt in the second tier, including a brace for current club Southampton last season which knocked West Brom out of the play-offs at the semi-final stage.

New boss Tony Mowbray also has history with Armstong having managed him at both Coventry City and Blackburn, where he scored 58 goals in 151 Championship appearances, eventually earning the £15m move which took him to St. Mary’s Stadium in the summer of 2021.

Should Armstong sign, then he would be expected to add significant firepower to the front line and boost the Baggies’ chances of sealing a spot in the top six come the end of the season.

Armstrong would be second striking addition of deadline day

Assuming the deal with Southampton is approved, Armstong will be the fourth and final signing of the winter transfer window after the Baggies also announced the arrival of Tammer Bany from Danish side Randers on Monday.

The 21-year-old is a versatile attacking player who can operate across the front three or as a number ten, and had drawn the attention of a number of clubs across the continent, but has now signed with West Brom on a three-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed fee which could reportedly reach £3.3m including add-ons.

The arrival of Bany followed the capture of Northern Ireland international midfielder Isaac Price, who signed from Belgian side Standard Liege in a deal rumoured to be worth as much as £2.5m, and the loan signing of Tottenham Hotspur striker Will Lankshear.

The Baggies were however dealt a deadline day blow when Ipswich Town completed the signing of first-choice goalkeeper Alex Palmer for an undisclosed fee. West Brom have recalled 23-year-old stopper Josh Griffiths from a promising loan spell at Bristol Rovers to provide cover. Griffiths will now compete with former Derby County ‘keeper Joe Wildsmith for a starting spot in Mowbray’s line-up.
