West Bromwich Albion were defeated 2-0 by Sheffield United on Saturday afternoon as the Carlos Corberan era got off to a disappointing start. Some sloppy defending in the first half allowed for the Blades to score two early goals - the first from Iliman Ndiaye and a second from Oli McBurnie.

The Baggies dominated much of the second period but were unable to create any clear-cut chances, making for a frustrated home crowd. The result sees Sheffield United win their first game in six Championship fixtures - boosting their own hopes of promotion.

Speaking post-match, Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom revealed Albion had in fact given his side an advantage - before the game had even started. “We were pretty sure what the setup would be like,” he said. “I think West Brom maybe put a little too much out on their social media channels for us to see.

“We were pretty sure what [their shape] would look like. But yeah, [really] it’s about us, our intent, how we play. We didn’t want to wait for anything to spark us off - a tackle, a goal, something on the sideline. We want to play how we want to from the first whistle.

“We asked for personality and showed it from start to finish. Good goals, and defended everything in the box, even with players out of position at times.  It was good to be two up early on and then we could play on the counter. Probably should’ve got more goals but I can’t be greedy.”

West Brom were rather predictable on the day as they were stubborn in a wide approach - and it seems Heckingbottom and his side were able to prepare for exactly that. The Blades seemed to have answers to near enough every cross Albion played into the area. No wonder they couldn’t make a breakthrough.

Another Bladesman to speak positively about his own side post-match was the man of the match winner, Iliman Ndiaye. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “It feels unbelievable. We were working hard for the win and now just need to carry on this momentum. I definitely enjoyed myself - it’s about getting on the scoresheet and assisting the goal - I’m glad to contribute to the win.”

Oli McBurnie, who fired in from the edge of the area to give his side a two-goal buffer, said: “The boys were good today - we haven’t been in the best form. It was good to get the two early goals and show character to grind it out. I think I need a scan after [heading out so many balls]! It’s what I’m here to do. Whenever I can help the defence, I will.”

West Brom will have to go back to the drawing board ahead of their next Championship fixture - against Blackpool in just three days’ time.
