West Bromwich Albion are closing in on their first signing of the 2024 summer transfer window.

The Baggies have booked a medical for IF Brommapojkarna star Tobjorn Heggem following an agreement to sign the defender on a permanent deal.

Heggem is expected to join West Brom imminently, swapping Swedish top flight Allsvenskan for the English second tier. The 25-year-old will undergo medical tests today (June 25) before signing his contract to complete the switch.

Predominantly a centre-half but regularly utilised at left-back, the Norwegian is set to offer Carlos Corberan terrific versatilty at the back. It’s a clever move as Heggem, whose contract at Brommapojkarna was set to expire in December, can directly replace the outgoing Erik Pieters.

What the deal could indicate, however, is the imminent departure of star defender Cedric Kipre. The Ivorian is expected to leave The Hawthorns upon the expiry of his contract in five days’ time after failing to reach an agreement to extend his Albion stay.

Kipre’s exit will come as a big blow for West Brom as the 27-year-old, formerly of Cardiff City and Wigan Athletic, was a standout player last season. Only two Championship games were missed and he also featured twice in the Emirates FA Cup – but a move to Turkey is now reportedly on the cards.
