West Brom inflict Sunderland blow as genius transfer 'one step away'

The latest transfer news as West Brom look set to beat Sunderland to a 'genius' midfield signing.

West Bromwich Albion are reportedly in advanced talks to sign former Sunderland, Inter Milan and Saint-Ettiene midfielder Yann M'Vila on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old, who has been without a club since leaving Greek giants Olympiacos on July 1 of last year, is desperate to get back playing at a high level. The Baggies have progressed in talks to sign M'Vila for free, dealing a blow to Sunderland as they were keen on a reunion.

French outlet Foot Mercato reports Albion are expected to reach an agreement with the midfielder soon, with a four-month deal being discussed. M'Vila, who doesn't mind about dropping his wage packet from earlier in his career, is said to be very keen on the move.

If completed, this could be some genius business from West Brom as M'Vila would offer vast experience and much-needed versatility to Carlos Corberan's roster. The 22-time France international, who can play in defensive midfield or at centre back, has played over 500 matches throughout his career.

M'Vila has 37 Premier League appearances to his name from his time at Sunderland, while he's featured in 204 Ligue 1 games. Experience in Europe can be boasted, too, as M'Vila has racked up a total of 64 appearances in either the UEFA Europa League or Champions League between 2011 and 2023.
