West Bromwich Albion are in Sky Bet Championship action for the first time in exactly one month as they take on Sunderland on Monday evening. Heading away to the Stadium of Light, Carlos Corberan’s side will be hoping to continue a run of fine form they managed to put together before the World Cup break.

Ahead of the tournament over in Qatar, the Baggies lifted off the foot of the league standings with three successive victories to nil. Switching from a back three under Steve Bruce to a flat four, Albion have shown a huge improvement in both halves of the field - and there have been some real resurgences for some players.

The Corberan era started off with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Sheffield United but ever since there has hardly been a bad word said about the Baggies. The next game, a 1-0 home win over Blackpool, was followed by a 1-0 away victory at QPR and a comfortable 2-0 against Stoke City at the Hawthorns.

Monday’s opponents are also in good form, however, as Tony Mowbray has led the Black Cats to three wins and a draw in their last five outings. It will still be a tough clash even despite Albion’s increased confidence - and there are a few injury concerns that could make things even harder.

What is the injury news ahead of Sunderland vs West Bromwich Albion?

West Brom are boosted by the returns of defender Semi Ajayi and striker Daryl Dike. The latter is perhaps a doubt for a start as he missed the recent friendlies against Elche and Burnley with cold and flu symptoms. Dike is over said illness, though, and should feature in some capacity.

“Ajayi has been working all the days so far. It is positive watching all the players recover with the group,” Corberan said ahead of the clash. “We have recovered and started to develop ideas. We are happy with the physical impact [of friendly fixtures] on the players.”

It was not all positive from the Spaniard, though, as he had some bad news to deal out. Corberan admitted there are two doubts ahead of the game, but he kept his cards close to his chest as to which players he was referring to. “We have a couple with question marks. We need to assess,” Corberan said.

For the hosts, meanwhile, Alex Pritchard and Luke O’Nien have not trained ahead of the clash but Mowbray has labeled the duo as ‘warriors’, and thinks they could play their part. Edouard Michut is nearing a return but remains a doubt, whereas Ross Stewart is still building up fitness with the Under-21s.
