The life of a footballer can be tough when you’re still waiting for a club to take a chance on you.

Former West Brom midfielder Romaine Sawyers remains without a club since leaving Cardiff City.

The 32-year-old was let go by the Bluebirds in the summer after limited playing opportunities last season. He made just six appearances in the 2023/24 campaign, with only two of those coming in the Championship.

Sawyers joined Cardiff when his contract with the Baggies expired, and he made 39 appearances under the likes of Steve Morison, Mark Hudson, and Sabri Lamouchi. The arrival of Turkish manager Erol Bulut saw Sawyers moved down the pecking order, and he was never able to regain his place back in the side. Sawyers departed South Wales with 45 appearances, three goals, and one assist.

Despite his lack of club, Sawyers was recently called up to the Saint Kitts and Nevis squad. They recently played matches against the British Virgin Islands and the Cayman Islands, with Sawyers playing in both games. His team are first, and have won promotion to the second tier.

Birmingham-born Sawyers had two spells at West Brom, having come through their academy. He began his senior career at the Hawthorns, but had to depart to get playing opportunities, and he performed well at Walsall. Sawyers built up a positive relationship with Dean Smith who took him to Brentford, and made over 130 appearances for the Bees.

His performances for the West London side caught the attention of WBA, and they signed him in the summer of 2019 for £2.9m when Slaven Bilic was in charge. He made 43 appearances during their promotion winning campaign, and then made 19 appearances in the Premier League. When their relegation was confirmed, Sawyers was loaned out to Stoke City, and appeared 29 times for the Potters, before his WBA contract expired.
