West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan can now be considered a leading candidate for the vacant Leicester City job, according to a reputable report.

The Spaniard is said to be a priority target to replace Championship winning boss Enzo Maresca, who recently left to fill Mauricio Pochettino’s boots at Chelsea.

Corberan, who has met all expectations at West Brom despite the challenge of not being able to spend anything in the transfer market, guided the Baggies to a fifth-placed Championship finish last campaign. The former Leeds United and Huddersfield Town man was unable to lead his team to promotion via the play-offs but it was still a successful campaign, all things considered.

The Telegraph reports Leicester are impressed by Corberan’s work and are seriously considering approaching West Brom over his potential appointment. It’s understood Albion would be due around £3.5 million-£4 million in compensation if their manager was poached, a cost Leicester would preferably avoid given their financial situation.

It’s said Corberan fills the Foxes’ criteria as they look to avoid relegation next season following promotion back to the Premier League. With that in mind, Leicester may just bite the bullet. As for Corberan himself, it would probably be too good of an opportunity to turn down as he’s yet to manage in the English top flight and it’s one of his top career ambitions.

West Brom fearful of losing Corberan

The Baggies, if and when officially approached by Leicester, would be understandably apprehensive as Corberan has had a terrific start to life at The Hawthorns. New owner Shilen Patel, also very impressed by the manager, wants the Spaniard to stay for several years to come.

"I'm really excited and happy that Carlos is our manager," Patel said in an interview with WBA TV. "To me, he is the manager with the perfect mindset for the project that we are embarking on.

“I had the chance to meet with Carlos very briefly when I made a visit here towards the back end of October. He certainly made an impression on me. I think you can tell he has a great sense of detail and his intensity is apparent.

“The work he has done and the result he has achieved in the time he has been there, they speak for themself. I’m really looking forward to seeing how he gets the best out of players now and in the years to come,” Patel continued.
