The Republic of Ireland suffered a 2-0 loss to Greece in the Nations League with Jayson Molumby starting.

The 25-year-old was viewed at by new Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrímsson as someone who could offer the team some bite. Unfortunately for the Bhoys in Green, they came away from the first international break of the season empty handed following defeats at home to England and Greece.

Molumby started against Greece on Tuesday night, following up from his appearance against England at the weekend. Hallgrimsson opted for a 4-4-1-1 formation with Molumby partnering Sunderland midfielder Alan Browne in the centre of the park and Southampton midfielder Will Smallbone slightly ahead of him.

Greece went in front through Fotis Ioannidis in the 50th minute, and then doubled their lead three minutes from time through Christos Tzolis. As for Molumby, he was only on the pitch for one of the goals, as he played 63 minutes before he made way for Brighton & Hove Albion forward Evan Ferguson.

He was the first player to make way as Ireland sought a response, but that didn’t come. The national media in Ireland however are in a disagreement as to how he played. In some cases he has a rating as high as seven, whereas one outlet has given him a four.

Picked out a couple of excellent long-range passes, including the one to Ogbene for his disallowed goal. Replaced by Evan Ferguson on 63. Lots of industry as always.

A strong first half from the midfielder who showed his fine passing range. Much better showing than Saturday but appeared frustrated coming off as Evan Ferguson was introduced.

Neat, tidy passing and produced a clever diagonal pass to find Ogbene in the lead-up to the Corkman’s scratched-off goal. But he needs to produce that type of creativity so much more regularly.

A bit of confidence and suddenly he’s a latter-day Glenn Hoddle. Had his customary bite in close exchanges but also pinged a couple of brilliant diagonals to get Ireland on the front foot. Unlucky to make way for Ferguson when others weren’t contributing as much.

Not as angry as he was against England. Some passes came off, some didn’t. The manager acted swiftly by withdrawing in an more attacking move.

Battled well in midfield. Molumby was calmer than he was against England - not necessarily a bad thing. Despite this, he had less impact on the ball in the Greek half than Browne, despite being stationed consistently higher up the pitch. The first Irish player to be withdrawn after 63 minutes.
