Final Championship table predicted: West Brom miss play-offs, Birmingham finish well, Derby relegated

After Steve Bruce’s appointment at the Hawthorns and a positive January at St Andrew’s - how are West Brom and Blues expected to finish the Championship campaign?

West Bromwich Albion will just miss out on the play-offs whilst Birmingham City will finish in their highest Championship position since the 2015-16 season, according to the most recent supercomputer calculations.

It also has Wayne Rooney’s Derby County facing the drop despite their valiant efforts to remain in the second tier.

The supercomputer, that is owned by the website FiveThirtyEight, has Baggies to miss out on the top six by five points come May and currently ranks them with just a slim 10% likelihood of earning promotion to the Premier League.

With Steve Bruce replacing Valerien Ismael, many were expecting an instant change in fortunes at the Hawthorns but for now, it doesn’t take a genius to work out that Albion need far more if they are to finish the season strong.

It’s all smiles at St Andrew’s though. Kind of.

According to the supercomputer (and get your finest bubbly ready for this one), Blues will finish 16th.

All jokes aside and that would mark an improvement, albeit minor, for the first time in a long time. It would give Birmingham their highest finish in seven years and may finally, finally, spark a bit of optimism for the future under Lee Bowyer.

In full then, here’s how the supercomputer has the table looking come 3PM on May 7.
