Former West Brom and Crystal Palace star joins Scottish Premiership club at 34

Former West Brom forward Dwight Gayle has completed a move to Scottish Premiership side Hibs.

The 34-year-old was without a club after his short-term contract at Derby County wasn't extended. He began last season at Stoke City, but six months out from its expiry, his contract with the Potters was ripped up.

For the first time in his career, Gayle will play outside of England, having played the entirety of his career through various levels of the English pyramid system. Gayle has penned a one-year contract at Easter Road, which will run until the end of the 2024/25 season.

“It’s great to be able to bring Dwight to the Club," said head coach David Gray to the official club website.

"He’s performed at a top-level throughout his career and has a real desire to show his abilities here in Scotland. He’s a different type of striker to what we currently have in the building.

"He’s a real penalty box type of striker, a great finisher, and his experience will be of great benefit to us. I look forward to working with him.”

The former Peterborough United striker scored 24 goals whilst on loan with the Baggies during the 2018-19 season. A return to the Hawthorns was suggested in the 2022/23 summer transfer window, but he opted for a move to the Bet365 Stadium.

He also counts Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, and Dagenham & Redbridge as his former clubs in the EFL. He played in the Premier League and the Championship 145 times each, with 88 goals scored in the top and second tier of English football.

Gayle has kept himself fit during the summer by joining a ten-week training camp with the Professional Footballers’ Association. It was launched to help players keep busy with the team of free agents playing friendlies against football clubs with scouts in attendance.

In their final match which was played at the end of August, Gayle played in a team alongside the likes of Ravel Morrison, Carl Jenkinson, and Martyn Waghorn against Cambridge United.
