Updated Championship transfer spend table as West Brom ranked against Derby County, Plymouth, and others

The Baggies are top of the Championship and they didn’t have to break the bank to do so.

West Brom proudly sit top of the Championship following a positive start to the campaign.

The Baggies have yet to taste defeat in the league this term and have picked up 16 points from a possible 18. Five wins and a draw against last season's losing play-off finalists Leeds United has given the Hawthorns a bit of a feel good factor.

Supporters were happy with the business done in the summer transfer window. For most of Carlos Corberan's tenure, he's had to deal with loans and freebies, but following a summer of change, he was backed in the window with Mikey Johnston arriving for a reported £3m.

Newly promoted Derby County had some money to spend after coming up from League One, whilst Plymouth Argyle under Wayne Rooney invested their money in to a new goalkeeper after selling Michael Cooper to Sheffield United.

Football is played on a pitch ultimately, but it’s always interesting to see how teams are faring based on the money spent in the summer. WBA weren’t the biggest spenders by any means, and still dipped their toes in to the free agent market, whilst signing some high-profile loanees like Lewis Dobbin and Mason Holgate.

Here, thanks to statistics from TransferMarkt, is how much every team spent in the summer compared to their actual league position.
