Carlos Corberan revealed the reason he substituted Erik Pieters during Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic was down to an injury concern. The experienced defender, who has formed a formidable partnership with Dara O’Shea at centre back of late, was replaced by Semi Ajayi with around 20 minutes to go. The former Stoke City man didn’t head off with any assistance – rather it was a cautious decision made by Corberan.

It was a real shame as Pieters had been playing well to help his side to yet another home clean sheet, and a ninth in the last 10 games at The Hawthorns. Wigan had a poor first half but pushed on with more aggression in the second to provide a bit more of a threat. Unfortunately for Pieters, he fell victim to this added passion, receiving a few whacks and one of these may have been rather costly.

“He received one kick in the knee where he had problems before and he started to feel an inflammation of the knee,” Corberan admitted post-match. “In that way, he couldn’t keep playing, and that’s why of course we made the change. So far yes, [he has been able to manage it], but let’s see for the next one. What happens for the next one I cannot answer because it depends on the next few days,” Corberan continued.

West Brom have already been plagued with injuries, with as many as nine sidelined before Tuesday’s win. The manager and supporters alike will be desperate not to see Pieters make that list hit double digits, but his presence for Saturday’s hosting of Huddersfield Town has now been thrust into doubt. Semi Ajayi, who replaced Pieters against Wigan, could step in again if Pieters can’t make it. Kyle Bartley is still out.
