Sheffield Wednesday have interest in a West Brom player whose contract expires at the end of the season.

Sheffield Wednesday are interested in pursuing a move for West Brom midfielder Alex Mowatt, according to sister paper The Star.

The Owls have so far been unsuccessful in numerous swoops for players, though are in a good position to sign Jeff Hendrick.

Wednesday, who are without a point in five Championship matches are seeking reinforcements, and Mowatt is under consideration.

It is unsure yet whether a move would be permanent or a loan deal, and whether they have made a bid or not.

The 28-year-old is under contract at The Hawthorn’s until the summer of 2024. He has made four appearances this season but all three of his outings in the Championship have been off the bench.

Mowatt last year spent the 2022/23 season at Middlesbrough and having returned to West Brom was relishing a new start under Carlos Corberan.

He said last month: "It’s a fresh start for me, a totally different manager and totally different staff. It’s about me coming in and trying to impress and just working hard, learning what the gaffer wants and trying to carry it out on the pitch.

"I never really thought I was done here, but I never wanted to sit around on the bench all season, I wanted to go and play. Both teams had a bad start - I thought at least one must get in the play-offs! - both got new managers and both shot up the league.

"Being in the final year of my contract... it’s not the first time I’ve been in this situation. It means nothing really, you’ve still got to go out and perform every week. Even when you’re not playing, train hard and work hard. It’s all you can do."

However, Lewis Cox, a journalist for the Express & Star however believes there won’t be any major departures. Ethan Ingram is being tipped to join Salford City on a season-long loan, whilst Rayhaan Tulloch has trained with Bradford City.

A right-back is being searched for, but the news is good given the rumoured pursuit of Brandon Thomas-Asante and Grady Diangana. Leeds United had interest in Thomas-Asante, and yesterday Stoke City had a bid of £2.5m rejected but West Brom’s valuation stands at a reported £5m.
