West Brom could turn into automatic promotion contenders, should they sign Peterborough United star Kwame Poku, according to an England international.

Poku has six goals and six assists in League One this term, and leads the assists chart for the division. He is under contract at London Road until 2025, and owner Darragh MacAnthony always ensures that when selling players that the club get a fee that he deems best for business.

The Baggies haven't paid a transfer fee since buying Nathaniel Chalobah in January, but a proposed takeover from parties in the United States could mean money is available in the January transfer window. Should a takeover be completed by then, England international Carlton Palmer believes that the signing of the 22-year-old could bolster their chances of promotion.

Speaking to Football League World, Palmer said: "Poku has registered six goals and six assists so far this season for the League One outfit, and he is only 22 and can play through the middle and down either flank.

Carlos Corberan likes players who are versatile and can play different positions, with Daryl Dike still struggling for consistent fitness and games.

“I think Carlos is looking for other options should the proposed takeover take place, as he looks to strengthen his squad to push on for a play-off place or even automatic promotion.”

West Brom are one of at least six Championship teams linked with Poku. Earlier this week TEAMtalk reported that West Brom along with Sunderland, Millwall, Ipswich Town, Stoke City and Bristol City are amongst the clubs watching Poku.

One team can be ruled out the race however. A report from Bristol Live however states that Poku is currently not under consideration. The Robins are on the search for attacking reinforcements after appointing new boss Liam Manning, but Poku right now isn't a target for them.

It makes it one less team to worry about for West Brom in their rumoured pursuit of Poku, but there is still many barriers to overcome if they are to come out on top in a six-team race.
