Wolverhampton Wanderers have moved ahead of Manchester United in the race for a Brazilian midfielder.

The Old Gold are reportedly leading the chase to sign Brazil international Andre from Fluminense after positive initial talks.

It was reported by TNT Sports BR in the early hours of Friday morning that Wolves and Manchester United both held an interest in the midfielder, with negotiations underway between the player’s agent and both clubs.

Now, according to Football Transfers, Wolves have moved ahead in the race. It’s stated that Man Utd are keeping Andre as an option but are sitting back, while Wanderers are stepping up their pursuit and are confident of striking an agreement.

It’s claimed Fluminense are open to a sale with the deal expected to be worth between €25 million (£21.1 million) and €30 million (£25.4 million) if it goes through.

Andre has been linked with a move to the Premier League for several years, with Liverpool, West Ham United and Fulham all keen last summer. The 23-year-old is said to be eager to move to England to fulfil a lifelong dream, giving Wolves a decent chance of acquiring his services.

Andre, who has played five times for the senior Brazil national team since his debut in June 2023, shares the same agent as Wolves star Joao Gomes. The pair are international teammates, so Gomes could theoretically put in a good word for the Old Gold.

Gary O’Neil’s side have a limited transfer budget, however, so it awaits to be seen just how they plan to settle the finances of the deal. A loan with an obligation to buy in the future could theoretically work but it would be complicated.

If Wolves do get the deal over the line for Andre, they will be signing a 196-time Fluminense appearance maker with experience at international and continental level. Still not the finished product, it could take a while for Andre to settle but he has the potential to be an outstanding player.
