Intense negotiations have been ongoing between the two clubs throughout the day and a breakthrough is now reportedly close to being reached.

Stansfield has been Birmingham’s dream target ever since last campaign’s loan deal came to an end, even despite several attacking reinforcements being made in the months that followed. The 21-year-old claimed all of the individual accolades at the club’s end of season awards following 13 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions.

The Telegraph reports Blues are now “closing in” on the signing of Stansfield from Fulham in a deal worth in excess of £10 million. There’s still lots do with just a few hours to go until the window slams shut but all parties are confident of completing the necessary next steps.

Rather crucially, personal terms have now been accepted by the player, who is excited by the proposition of returning to the club he adored during his loan spell.

If the deal is completed, it will be by far the most expensive transfer in League One history. Birmingham broke the previous record twice earlier in the window to bring in Willum Willumsson and Christoph Klarer, but even the fees for those two combined wouldn’t reach the stunning payment being planned tonight.

Stansfield recently returned to Birmingham but not in the way many fans would prefer, as he ran the show for Fulham as the Cottagers won 2-0 in the Carabao Cup. Stansfield scored on the night and was cheered by the thousands of Blues fans in attendance at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park.

After the game, Fulham boss Marco Silva effectively ruled out a return to Birmingham for Stansfield as he revealed his intention to reward the attacker with minutes in the Premier League. Now, though, that scenario has been blitzed by today’s progression in talks. It’s been left late but it’s a genuine possibility.
