A shock approach has been made by Aston Villa for one of Crystal Palace’s star players.

Aston Villa have reportedly contacted Crystal Palace to express an interest in signing striker Jean-Philippe Mateta this summer.

The Frenchman contributed an impressive 16 goals and five assists in 35 Premier League matches last season, finally coming alive following his €11 million (£9.2 million) transfer from Mainz in 2022.

Mateta played a vital role as Palace rose from mediocrity just above the relegation zone to stunning top-half finishers. Oliver Glasner has done a terrific job in charge of the Eagles, spearheaded by the fine work from the likes of Mateta and Eberechi Eze.

But the Palace party could be rudely interrupted as Express Sport reports Villa are keen on signing Mateta this summer as they search for potential Jhon Duran replacements.

The Villans are looking to take advantage of a recent breakdown in new contract talks between Mateta and Palace, it’s stated. Duran, meanwhile, is moving closer to joining West Ham United as negotiations are at an advanced stage.

Mateta, who turned 27 at the end of June, is heading into his prime years and could be an excellent option for Villa alongside Ollie Watkins. Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix remains a dream target but it’s understood the two deals are not linked.
