The 32-year-old, a free agent since the expiry of his contract on July 1, has been considering his options over recent weeks. Roberto, a one-club man up until this point, racked up a remarkable 373 senior appearances for Barça, scoring 19 goals and notching 43 assists. Before that, he played 106 times at youth level.

It’s time to move on, though, and Sport45 reports Villa are “pressing” to sign Roberto, with an offer already on the table. It’s claimed a bid from Ajax stands out but a move to the Premier League is preferred. West Ham are an option but Villa are said to be closer to a full persuasion.

Predominantly a right-back over recent years but also very accomplished as a central midfielder, Roberto boasts 62 career appearances in the UEFA Champions League. That experience in Europe’s elite continental competition could be invaluable for Villa as they embark on their debut campaign.

Unai Emery has played a key role in the Villans’ efforts to sign Roberto in a bid to bring his fellow countryman to B6. Matty Cash and Ezri Konsa are the current right-back options at Emery’s disposal but better depth is desired.

Cash has been linked with a move away to either Inter Milan or AC Milan, too, so signing Roberto for free could allow Villa to profit from the situation. The latter would likely be an impressive upgrade as well, so there’s very little not to like.
