Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to face competition if they follow up on interest in Sunderland winger Jack Clarke, as Southampton are now in the equation.

The Old Gold were linked with Clarke in the winter, alongside a host of Premier League clubs including West Ham United, Crystal Palace and Everton.

Sunderland’s top scorer from the season just gone with 15 goals in 40 Championship appearances, Clarke certainly stole the show at the Stadium of Light. It was a poor season for the Black Cats as they finished 16th and a whopping 17 points outside the play-off positions, but Clarke did what he could to keep his team competitive.

Having stormed the Championship for a second successive season, Clarke is again popping up on the radar of Premier League clubs. Daily Echo and The Telegraph both report Southampton have added the 23-year-old to their shortlist, hurrying up the likes of Wolves, West Ham, Palace and Everton to act on their interest.

Sunderland outline Jack Clarke intentions

The Black Cats aren’t convinced Clarke will definitely leave this summer, especially as the plan is to remain firm with their reported £20 million asking price. Interim boss Mike Dodds insisted before Sunderland’s last game of the season, at home to Sheffield Wednesday, that it wasn’t necessarily Clarke’s farewell fixture.

“He still has a long period on his contract,” Dodds told our sister publication, Sunderland Echo. “I'll be really intrigued in terms of the Jack situation. I know there was a lot of interest last summer, which the club didn't feel was anywhere near their valuation.

“I'm not going to get drawn into what the football club wants or Jack wants, but I don't feel it is as completely foregone if that makes sense in terms of Jack is going to leave the football club,” Dodds continued.
