From Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, the champions and title challengers of recent years are all capable of maintaining high pass totals.

Having more of the ball doesn’t always end up in teams earning three points on matchday but more often than not it certainly increases the probability of a positive result.

Asserting control of a game can be very important, especially when defending a lead. Sometimes, of course, it can be counter-productive as some sides end up running out of ideas on the ball but, for the most part, a high average possession is a positive.
