Birmingham City and West Brom’s Championship rivals part company with manager after six games

Football League veteran manager Neil Warnock is to stand down from his post as manager of Huddersfield Town.

The 75-year-old was meant to have managed Huddersfield for the entirety of the 2023/24 season after guiding the Yorkshire club to survival, but they have now chosen to go in a different direction.

Reports of Warnock's departure surfaced over the weekend, and now the Championship outfit have decided to make the change and act quickly, as they source his successor. It is believed that Huddersfield already have a European appointment lined up, and that they could take charge this week.

Warnock will take charge of Huddersfield's clash with Stoke City on Wednesday night, and then he will depart the John Smith's Stadium, leaving them for a second time having been appointed as manager earlier this year.

"We've actually done what we set out to do really," responded Warnock when asked why he was departing the club.

As Jake (chief executive) said, Kevin (the owner) has a three-year plan to reach the PL. When Dean brought me back he pleaded for days and days and changed my mind and I said I'd come back and help while I was wanted.

"Once they told me they wanted to bring someone in...yes, I thought it would be about Christmas time, but once they told me that I think they had to move on quickly.

He added: "If you're not wanted you want to go straight away. I don't mean that how it maybe sounds - we always said we'd be straight with each other and that's what we've done, and Ronnie and I wish them all the best. I've told the lads there's no reason not to push towards the play-offs now.

"I've always said to Kevin, it's his club and that I'd go whenever he wants me to go. I think it was the right thing that I came back, I don't think it would have helped anyone to come in in pre-season, but we've made a lot of progress.”

At the time of his departure, Huddersfield had won back-to-back games under Warnock, defeating one of his former clubs Rotherham United at the weekend. Huddersfield are 17th at the time of Warnock's announced departure.

Birmingham City had been due to come up against Warnock at St Andrews on Tuesday, October 3, meanwhile West Brom suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Terriers at The Hawthorn's before the international break.
