Aston Villa have been tipped by a Liverpool icon to sign a world-class attacker.

Former Liverpool and England winger John Barnes has encouraged Aston Villa to complete the signing of Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix.

Barnes believes Villa would be the perfect destination for Felix to reignite his career following mixed success on loan at Barcelona and Chelsea over recent seasons. The Portugal international hasn’t lived up to the £115 million fee Atletico spent to acquire his services, but most would argue he’s still got the potential to unlock.

Villa are yet to open talks with Atletico to sign Felix but Unai Emery has listed the attacker as a dream target. Fans appear thrilled about the prospect of having such a reputable player joining the forward ranks at Villa Park.

Barnes, sharing the similar levels of excitement, has analysed Felix’s chances of succeeding with a second shot in the Premier League.

“Well, it depends on the rest of the team, because Joao Felix is a player who’s very, very technical and very good. But if all you have is technical players it’ll be tough. This is why he never worked at Chelsea and even for Portugal, because you’ve got lots of technical players,” Barnes said.

“If you have lots of hard working players around him then he gives you that extra bit of quality. Yes, it can work and if you look at the players that they’ve trusted and they’ve signed, they could complement each other because you have to complement each other with styles.

“From a creativity point of view, he can give me that creativity. He’ll play very well with Ollie Watkins, but as I said you’ll have to have hard workers around him. So it really depends on the balance of the team. But I think in the right team, he could be a very good signing for sure,” Barnes concluded.
