Former Birmingham City midfielder Lee Carsley is in line to become the next manager of the Republic of Ireland, according to a report.

The ROI are on the search for a replacement for Stephen Kenny after deciding not to extend his contract. Kenny failed to get Ireland close to EURO 2024 and did not qualify unlike England and Scotland with Wales in March's play-offs.

According to a report from The Irish Sun, Carsley will 'likely' be named manager of Ireland in the next seven days. He is their preferred option and now Ireland bosses will decide on Tuesday to recommend Carsley to the board as their next appointment.

Carsley is currently the manager of the England under-21s national team and led them to success this summer. It means a change in manager for Blues' on loan Fulham striker Jay Stansfield, who was in the under-21s camp in November.

The 49-year-old has been coaching for the last 12-years having retired in 2011. He made 48 appearances for Birmingham City between 2008 to 2010 and returned to St Andrew's in 2017 to become under-23s coach. He managed Blues on an interim basis before the appointment of Steve Cotterill but left in March 2018 following his sacking. He has since worked in the age grade set up with England and has managed England's under-20s and now their under-21s.

Carsley's other clubs as a player include Derby County, Blackburn Rovers, Coventry City and Everton. He made 40 caps for Ireland after making his debut for them in 1997 having qualified through his grandmother who is from Dunmanway, County Cork.
