League One team of the week rewards Birmingham City, Barnsley and Wrexham stars

League One title favourites Birmingham City are unbeaten four weeks into the new season but Chris Davies’ side face fierce competition from Wrexham and Stockport County, with both teams also yet to lose.

It was a strong weekend for Blues as graft and determination paid off to seal a last-gasp three points against Wigan Athletic. Scott Wright came off the bench to score the winner in stoppage time, sending the Tilton End into a frenzy on his debut for the club.

Wrexham’s fine start has continued following their promotion from League Two, with yet another victory seeing the Red Dragons up to second in the standings. Phil Parkinson’s men were clinical to beat Peterborough United 2-0 away from home on Saturday.

There was a thriller at Bloomfield Road as Blackpool and Wycombe Wanderers played out an intense 2-2 draw, while Shrewsbury Town threw off the shackles to claim their first points of the season in a dominant 3-0 win away at Leyton Orient.

Another victory of the same scoreline was earned by Barnsley as the Tykes thrashed Crawley Town away from home. Stockport weren’t able to continue their perfect start to the new campaign, however, as they dropped points in a 1-1 draw at Mansfield Town.

The other results from the recent weekend were Rotherham United 2-1 Huddersfield Town, Reading 2-0 Charlton Athletic, Bolton Wanderers 0-2 Exeter City, Bristol Rovers 2-0 Cambridge United, Stevenage 0-1 Lincoln City and Northampton Town 0-0 Burton Albion.

GK: Joel Pereira (Reading) - 7.60

The goalkeeper made two saves and three claims to preserve a clean sheet in the 2-0 win over Charlton Athletic.

RB: Luca Hoole (Shrewsbury Town) - 7.45

Hoole had a solid game as the Shrews beat Leyton Orient 3-0. The right-back made six interceptions, two tackles and two clearances.

CB: Christoph Klarer (Birmingham City) - 7.94

Klarer was the star man for Blues in the 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic as he won all of his duels, both on the ground and in the air.

CB: Thomas O’Connor (Wrexham) - 8.01

O’Connor was a rock at the back for the Red Dragons in the 2-0 win away at Peterborough as he won two aerial duels, two tackles and made four clearances.

LB: Mal Benning (Shrewsbury Town) - 8.28

Banning registered an impressive seven tackles, five clearances and one interception.

RM: Luke Thomas (Bristol Rovers) - 8.24

Thomas assisted the first goal of the game and won five tackles in Rovers’ 2-0 triumph over Cambridge United.

CM: Adam Phillips (Barnsley) - 8.61*

Phillips put on a talismanic display for the Tykes, scoring two of the goals in the 3-0 win away at Crawley Town.

CM: Lee Evans (Blackpool) - 8.59

Evans battled hard to score both goals for the Tangerines in the 2-2 draw against Wycombe Wanderers.

LM: Corey O’Keefe (Barnsley) - 8.12

The left midfielder assisted Barnsley’s opener and put in a great shift, creating two further chances and making four interceptions throughout.

ST: Promise Omochere (Bristol Rovers) - 8.47

The Irishman netted both goals for Rovers - one on either side of the break - to clinch a big three points on home soil.

ST: Daniel Udoh (Wycombe Wanderers) - 8.08

Udoh netted one goal but could’ve had even more as he registered six shots and four on target in the 2-2 draw away at Blackpool.
