King Charles III coronation date: which Aston Villa, Birmingham City and West Brom fixtures will be affected?

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles III’s coronation will take place on 6 May next year, and it could have implications for football fixtures across the UK.

It comes following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September. The King ascended the throne immediately after her death, with his coronation now being announced.

The King is said to be scaling back on the extravagance of the normal ceremony. However, the traditional event will remain deeply religious. The Queen Consort will also have a role in proceedings.

Sport could once again be stopped during the May weekend on 6 and 7, as it was for following the death of the Queen.

Will football fixtures will be affected?

A full programme of Premier League and English Football League action is scheduled that weekend. It’s not been confirmed yet whether the fixtures on May 6 will definitely be rescheduled, although the FA are expected to announce their official plan for the affected fixtures following consultation with the UK government and it is likely fixtures will be rescheduled.

The coronation will likely see one of the biggest police operations Metropolitan Police has ever undertaken, mean fixtures in the capital that weekend are in serious doubt. Fixtures taking place that weekend, include: Fulham v Leicester, Tottenham v Crystal Palace and West Ham v Man United.

The West Midlands derby between Wolves and Aston Villa is scheduled to take place at 3pm on Saturday, May 6.

The final weekend of the Championship season also takes place on May 6. Birmingham City are due to host Shefiield United at St Andrew’s, with West Bromwich Albion away at Swansea City.
