After 46 grueling match weeks, the league stage of the 2023/24 Sky Bet Championship campaign has reached its conclusion.
Fans in the West Midlands experienced contrasting emotions as Birmingham City were relegated to League One on the final day but West Bromwich Albion finished fifth to qualify for the play-offs. Coventry City, meanwhile, finished nine points outside the top six.
Leicester City were crowned champions but only just as Ipswich Town sensationally claimed second to make it back-to-back promotions. Leeds United were third after a late rut, followed by Russell Martin’s Southampton.
The teams joining Blues in the drop to League One are Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United after disappointing seasons. Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle survived relegation despite their recent promotions, while Blackburn Rovers’ final-day win secured safety.
It was a mightily cutthroat season, with most battles going down to the last fixture. With that competitiveness often came physicality, with teams battling in key areas of the field to run out on top in matches. That wouldn’t always work, though, as some sides would fail in winning back possession more than others, instead giving away fouls.
Referees are regularly called into action in the Championship, as is the aggressive nature of the division. But which teams were the worst serial foulers during the season just gone and can therefore be judged to be the dirtiest? From the least fouls to the most, here’s a full run-through.
