The former Blues and Baggies goalkeeper has retired - for a second time in 11 months.

Former Birmingham City, West Brom and England goalkeeper Ben Foster has today announced his retirement.

The 40-year-old - who had been with Wrexham for his second spell - had initially opted to play on this season after joining the Welsh club on a short-term deal last year. He had announced his retirement in September 2022, but joined the Ryan Reynolds owned-club in March, helping them to win the National League title.

Foster signed a one-year deal at the Racecourse Ground, but has retired with immediate effect having shipped 13 goals in the first four matches of the League Two campaign. He was in between the sticks during their 5-5 draw with Swindon Town last Saturday, and following discussions with the manager, he has now retired.

In a statement published on Wrexham’s official club website, Foster said: “The honest truth is that my performances this season haven’t reached the level I demand of myself and I feel that now is the right time to retire.

“At the forefront of my mind when making this decision, was not only what was best for me but also the Club, and making the decision now gives the Club every opportunity to assess their options before the window closes.

“Wrexham will always have a special place in my heart.”

Dragons boss Phil Parkinson added: “Ben has been the model professional while at Wrexham and has done everything we have asked of him.

“It takes a big person to make the decision he has and one who really understands this Football Club, with the timing of his decision.

“I am sure I speak for everyone, when thanking him for his contribution that went far beyond that one magnificent penalty save against Notts County to help us gain promotion last season.

“Wrexham AFC was a better place for having Ben Foster around the Club.”

Foster's 23-year-playing career saw him play for the likes of Manchester United and Watford, as well as spells in the Midlands with West Brom and Birmingham City. He made 43 appearances for Blues in the 2010/11 season, and helped them win the Carabao Cup.

He joined the Baggies on loan following Blues relegation, and that turned into a permanent move, and so he made 223 appearances during his time at The Hawthorns.
