Dion Sanderson: Young Wolves defender could be set for Birmingham City return

Wolves centre-back Dion Sanderson could make a quickfire return to local rivals Blues after the Black Country side’s number of Covid cases reduced.
Sanderson, 22, was recalled from a season-long loan at St Andrew’s at the start of the month as cover for Wolves, who also had Willy Boly injured and Romain Saiss at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Blues have since signed rising 19-year-old Manchester United star Teden Mengi on loan for the remainder of their Championship campaign and the centre-back made an impressive debut at Preston on Saturday.
Blues are also in negotiations to bring in Fulham defender Alfie Mawson on a permanent deal but, if that transfer fails to materialise, then Sanderson could well find himself moving back down the M6 having enjoyed his initial stint in the Second City.
Regardless, Birmingham boss Lee Bowyer is known to be working to a tight budget so the availability of Sanderson may yet see him decide to park the Mawson move until the summer in a bid to strengthen his squad permanently in other areas.

Should Sanderson – who is athletic and very comfortable on the ball - unexpectedly feature for Wolves before they sanction a loan spell, then he would only be allowed to return to St Andrew’s as FIFA rules stipulate a player can only represent two clubs in one season.
